It took all the Doctor's strength to pull Jo away.  She fought him desperately, and although she was unable to escape, her struggles prevented the Doctor from dealing with the box.  By now it was glowing white hot, and giving out clouds of choking smoke.

The laboratory door opened and the Brigadier  and Captain Yates entered.  To their amazement they saw Jo and the Doctor fighting fiercely.

At the sight of them, the Doctor lifted Jo off her feet, and literally threw her across the room.  'Hold her!' he yelled.  Jo cannoned into the two soldiers like a well aimed ball in a skittle alley.  All three collapsed in a tangle of arms and legs.

The Doctor whipped of his jacket and wrapped it round the box.  Immediately the jacket started to burn.  The Doctor ran to the window and hurled the blazing bundle through the glass.  There was a shattering crash, a splash, then a tremendous 'whumph'.  The Doctor saw a tremendous waterspout surge up from the little canal.  There were clouds of steam, and the murky water hissed and bubbled.

The dishevelled Brigadier, who had managed to untangle himself from Jo and Yates, came and stood beside the Doctor, looking down at the seething canal.  'There'll be complaints about that, you know,' he said disapprovingly.

The Doctor looked at him with grim amusement.  'My dear Lethbridge-Stewart, if I hadn't got rid of that box, none of us would have been here to listen to them.'

'Suppose you're right,' said the Brigadier philosophically.  'What was that thing?'

'Saturnian solar bomb.  Produces intense, localised heat.  It would have charred everything and everyone in this room into a heap of fine white ash.'

The Brigadier shuddered.  'How the blazes did it get past the security checks?'

'I'm afraid Jo brought it in.'

'Nonsense.  Miss Grant would never...'

'Look at her!' interrupted the Doctor.  The Brigadier turned.  Jo was standing quietly beside Yates, her eyes vacantly staring into space.

'Miss Grant,' snapped the Brigadier.  Jo didn't move.

'She can't hear you,' said the Doctor gently.  'She's in a state of post-hypnotic shock.'

'Hypnotised?' repeated the Brigadier incredulously.  'Who did it?'

'The Master, of course.  Why else do you think she tried to send us all up in smoke?'  The Doctor crossed to Jo, and pushed her gently into a chair.  Jo gazed ahead unseeing, as the Doctor peered into her eyes and took her pulse.

Captain Yates said, 'Look here, Doctor, I thought no hypnotist could make anyone do anything they didn't want to?'

'Not the average hypnotist, perhaps.  But the Master can manipulate the human mind as he pleases.'

Fact and Findings
First edition cover price - 35p

Classic chapter title - The Deadly Daffodils (there's also a Terror - cleverly - The Terror Begins is chapter one).

Throughout its run, the novelisation included six black and white illustrations by Alan Willow.

Later editions were numbered 63 in the Doctor Who library.

The original Target edition was published by Universal-Tandem Publishing (ISBN 0 426 10639 3). It was reprinted in 1976 by Tandem. The cover was the same but the ISBN had changed to 0 426 11500 7 and the price had gone up to 40p. The first re-jacketed edition was released in March 1979, published by Wyndham, and kept the ISBN 0 426 11500 7.

A hardback, using Hood's cover, was released by W. H. Allen in February 1981.
Cover Data
Brookes' original cover design had Pertwee's head in the O of WHO (see The Giant Robot) and just had the Nestene Consciousness writhing around the telecommunications site, being confronted by a UNIT jeep (the Doctor and the Master box-out is absent).

Both the 1975 and 1979 editions boast incredibly imaginative covers, given the representation of the Nestene Consciousness creature in the TV serial. 1979's rendering of the many-tentacled monster, something between spider, crab and octopus... at the front of its body a single huge eye glared at them, blazing with alien intelligence and deadly hatred... is portrayed particularly graphically.

Gift Set

The novel was included in an unnumbered Doctor Who Gift Set, released in 1986. This was the final set in a run of gift sets comprising four recently released (or re-released) novelisations in a cardboard slip case. The novels in the boxed set were The Keys of Marinus, Meglos, The Keeper of Traken and The Mind of Evil or Terror of the Autons (depending on stock). The box featured a photo of Colin Baker(!) on both sides (identical to the fifth set), and had ISBN 0 426 32410 8. In all there were nine gift sets released between 1982 and 1986 (the first eight were numbered).
  • On Target was a website dedicated to the Target Novelizations of Doctor Who and had a lot of information on each book.
  • I cannot find it anywhere on the web now so I have used the Wayback Machine to get information for these books.
  • I originally had permission to use covers from On Target, for books that I do not own, on this site.
  • Anything that idicates that a book is owned within the "On Target" section is referring to the owner of that site and not to my library.
  • This is currently unfinished, but a work in progress...

  • I try to maintain page numbers for audiobooks even though obviously there aren't any. I do this to keep track of pages read and I try to use the Kindle version page numbers for this.
  • Synopses marked with an asterisk (*) were generated by an AI. There aren't a lot since this is an iffy way to do it - AI seems to make stuff up.
  • When specific publication dates are unknown (ie prefixed with a "Cir"), I try to get the publication date that is closest to the specific printing that I can.
  • When listing chapters, I only list chapters relevant to the story. I will usually leave off Author Notes, Indices, Acknowledgements, etc unless they are relevant to the story or the book is non-fiction.
  • Page numbers on this site are for the end of the main story. I normally do not include appendices, extra material, and other miscellaneous stuff at the end of the book in the page count.
